D. Jean McLaughlin, 90, a resident of Penn Hall, Chambersburg, formerly of Shippensburg, died on the evening of Wednesday, June 18, 2014, surrounded by her family.
She was born on July 7, 1923, in Walnut Bottom, a daughter of the late G. Lee and Ruth Neron Matthews.
Jean was a wonderful mother and homemaker throughout her life. She was a long-time, and very active member of the Messiah United Methodist Church, serving as the financial secretary for many years. Jean was involved in the creation of the Shippensburg Area Meals on Wheels, was a former tax assessor, and also volunteered on the local election board. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing and needle work, but most of all, Jean enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert C. McLaughlin of Penn Hall; five children, Barbara J. (James) Higginbotham of Blairs Mills, Robert Lee (Joan) McLaughlin of Wildwood Crest, NJ, G. Jeffrey (Frances) McLaughlin of York, Christine M. (Wayne) Heberlig of Mt. Wolf, and Brian Matthews (Pamela) McLaughlin of Shippensburg; two sisters, Winnifred Pattison of Walnut Bottom and Helen Hunsecker of CA; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald Matthews.
Her memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at the Messiah United Methodist Church. The Rev. Wayne Heberlig, her son-in-law, will officiate. Private inurnment will occur in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Messiah United Methodist Church at 30 S. Penn St. Shippensburg, PA 17257.
