Clarence E. "Buddy" Mooney, Jr., 83, of Shippensburg, PA, passed away Thursday morning, November 14, 2013, at home. Born November 5, 1930, in Greene Township, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence Mooney, Sr. and the late Margaret (Witter) Mooney. He attended schools in the Chambersburg School District.
In his early years, he learned about the operation of an apple orchard by working on his family orchard in Greene Township and then went on as young man to supervise an orchard for R. T. Criswell. In later years, Buddy was employed as a truck driver hauling milk, coal, and fuel oil for Miller Trucking in Shippensburg, Diller Trucking in Chambersburg, and Penn-Mar Oil Company in Chambersburg.
Mr. Mooney is survived by his wife Jean (Ocker) Mooney, whom he married in March 1956; his three children, Shirley (Mooney) Smith and her husband Tom of Shippensburg, Sharon (Mooney) Thomas and her husband Rick of Shippensburg, Dennis Mooney and his wife Cheryl of Newville; his five grandchildren Claudia (Thomas) Garner and her husband Jeff, Michelle (Thomas) McConnell and her husband Jason, Brittany Smith, Brandon Mooney, and Danielle Mooney; and his two great-grandchildren Caden Garner and Carly McConnell.
Buddy was the last surviving member of his immediate family, preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Donald, and by his sister Nancy.
In retirement, Buddy and Jean enjoyed caring for their home which they built in 1970. Buddy also enjoyed meeting with his friends on a regular basis for morning coffee at McDonald's in Shippensburg. His most sincere wish was to always live a quiet life in his own home surrounded by his family and community of friends, and God honored that wish even on Buddy's very last day.
Being a quiet person, Buddy asked his family not to have a memorial service or funeral after his passing. His ashes will be placed at Spring Hill Cemetery near those family members who passed before him -- including the much loved late Uncle Harry and Aunt Zelda Mooney.
Buddy was an excellent role model for his family members. The many life lessons he shared about respecting people, working hard, and being honest in all things will remain with us always.
Memorial contributions may be made to West End Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co. #3, 49 Lurgan Ave., Shippensburg, PA 17257.
