Christopher Varner

August 8, 1958 — August 18, 2023

Christopher “Chris” L. Varner, 65, of Shippensburg passed away on August 18, 2023 in his home among loved ones. He was born on August 8, 1958 in Carlisle, a son of Leroy E. Varner and the late Evelyn Mae (McDilda) Varner.

Chris was a 1976 graduate of Big Spring High School, after which he served in the Air Force. He married Kathryn MacKenzie on May 24, 1981 at the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church.

Chris worked as a sales manager for Naugle Motors and then went on to be a supervisor at Letterkenny Army Depot. He retired in May of 2022.

At the time of his passing, Chris was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A.M., the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W Post #6168, the Hub City Club, and the Chambersburg Country Club. He was a former member of the Hays Grove United Methodist Church and the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church. The Varner family would like to extend a special thank you to The Reverend Barbara Hutchinson, Priest of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Shippensburg, for her kindness, love, and support to Chris throughout his illness.

Chris was an avid golfer who enjoyed annual golf trips with many of his friends, in addition to countless hours spent playing pool and cards. He was part of a group of friends who traveled together, creating memories in over a dozen countries and multiple locations within the United States in the past several years. Chris loved the outdoors and was a keen hunter, angler, and resident grill master for friends and family. He was very mindful of the importance of giving back to the local community, serving in years past as a member of the South Newton Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 49, a member of the Shippensburg Boro Water Authority, was involved with Habitat for Humanity as a project manager building houses, and is fondly remembered for his several years playing Santa in the Shippensburg Christmas Parades.

In addition to his father and his wife of forty-two years, he is survived by his daughter Kristyn (Craig) Sama of Lancaster; two brothers, Greg (Linda) Varner of Carlisle, and Kim (Candy) Varner of Chambersburg; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
