Chester Reese

May 7, 1933 — July 14, 2014

Chester L. “Chet” Reese, 81, of Newburg, died on the morning of Monday, July 14, 2014 , at Manor Care, Carlisle.

He was born on May 7, 1933, in Mowersville, a son of the late Paul and Edna M. Swanger Reese. Chester married Ms. Genevieve L. Rowles on July 1, 1955, in Hagerstown MD. Less than a year later he was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy.

Chester was employed as a Locksmith at Shippensburg University for twenty years, retiring in 1995. Earlier in life, he made a living as a Plumber.

He was a member of the Newburg First Church of God, also taught Sunday School there, and was in general a very active church member. Chester was a very generous person who could do a little bit of everything as a handyman, helping many friends and family with their home projects. He was an exceptional gardner with a very eclectic collection of tropical and rare plants and vegetables. He was well known around the community for his somewhat unusual garden.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Genevieve; four children, Michael L. (Grace) Reese of Frederick, MD, Timothy S. (Kimberly) Reese of Newburg, Patrick S. (Chrystal) Reese of Athens, OH, and Micky R. (Julie) Reese of Goshen, IN; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Apple, Paul, Joey, Mark, Elsbeth, Nate, Kali, and Kate; four great grandchildren, Hera, Orion, Mason, and Malcom; three brothers, Martin J. Reese of Shippensburg, Cyrus J. Reese of Waynesboro, and Rev. Richard L. Reese of Mt. Holly Springs; three sisters, Ruth E. Meily of Lancaster, Doris J. Wilson of Shippensburg, and M. Lucille Shriner of Carlisle; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Mae Rotz, and one brother, Oliver Reese.

His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Newburg First Church of God. The Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr.; Pastor John Byers; and his brother, Rev. Richard L. Reese will officiate. Interment will follow in the Otterbein Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newburg First Church of God at 260 Newburg Rd. Newburg, PA 17240.
