Chester B. Jones, Sr., 92, of Shippensburg died on the morning of Saturday, December 6, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on December 1, 1922, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Jesse Freet and Leora Booz Jones. Chester married Ms. Bermeda Clever on August 10, 1940, in Winchester, VA, before being inducted into the U.S. Navy on May 16, 1944. He served aboard the U.S.S. Nevada in the Pacific Theater in which his ship participated in the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon (with three stars), the American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged on January 27, 1946.
Chester was employed at Domestic Castings, Shippensburg, for fifty years, retiring as a General Manager in 1991. He was a long-time member of the Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg; a member of the American Foundry Association; a post member of the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168 and Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, both of Shippensburg; and a life member of the Charles M. Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. Chester was known amongst many as a “Jack of all trades” kind of guy and in his free time he enjoyed gardening and dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Bermeda; one son, Chester B. Jones, Jr., of Southfield, MI; his daughter, Brenda L. (Randy) Pellow of Shippensburg; six grandchildren, Kimberly Bard, Gregory Reed, Brian Jones, Pamela Anderson-Smith, Eric Reed, and Jeremy Reed; nine great grandchildren, Ryan Jones, Michael D’Ambrosio, Vincent Reed, Megan Jones, Angela D’Ambrosio, Eric S. Reed, Samia Reed, Patrick Reed, and Ryan Reed; two brothers, Leroy (Frances) Jones and John (Romaine) Jones both of Shippensburg; three sisters, Bernita (Bruce) Bistlineof Carlisle, Beatrice Wagonner of Mechanicsburg, and Ethel Palmer of Shippensburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Wayne; and one sister, Louise Karper.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prince St. United Brethren Church or either the Durff- Kuhn V.F.W. or Charles M. Nitterhouse V.F.W.
