Caroline Smith

October 21, 1930 — February 8, 2015

Rev. Caroline J. Smith, 84, of Orrstown, died Sunday, February 8, 2015 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

She was born October 21, 1930 in Waynesburg, Greene County, PA. Caroline was a daughter of the late James and Sarah Fieldson Lilley. She was also preceded in death by a nephew but, more like a son, James W. Grim, a brother, James Lilley, and two sisters, Alberta Grim, and Mary Sczybach.

She was a member of the Upper Strasburg Church of God where she organized and pastored for over 34 years, retiring in 2000. During that time a new sanctuary and family life center were built. Prior to this Caroline served as Pastor of the Claysburg Church of God, Associate and Youth Pastor of the Everett Church of God, and as Evangelist in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada.

Caroline always looked forward to going to Crystal Spring Campground and seeing her many friends, which was a highlight for spring, summer, and fall. She was a real friend to all and always had time for everyone, sharing in times of joy and sorrow. She was a blessing to many, even during her last days in the hospital. No words are great enough to describe this special lady. Many families expressed that she was family to them, which was to her delight.

A special thanks to Robert and Bert Peck who faithfully drove her to Hershey for over two years to appointments. They also were there whenever needed, an inspiration of real friends and family.
Church was her life and if able she would want to say thanks to all for being so great to her. She would further say, “Come and Go with Me to Gloryland.”

Caroline is survived by Patricia Grim, like a daughter-in-law with whom she resided, an adopted granddaughter, Kim (Robert) Wicker Clever, an adopted great granddaughter, Alyssa Caroline Clever, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A time of celebration will be held Thursday, February 12, 2015 in the Upper Strasburg Church of God at 7 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Wayne E. Wicker, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Bell, and Rev. Floyd Myers. Burial will be held Friday in Parklawns Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. Viewings will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg and one hour prior to the services Thursday evening at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Strasburg Church of God, P.O. Box 68, Upper Strasburg, PA 17265.
