Carl N. “Stump” McVitty, 97, of Shippensburg, passed away Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Shippensburg Healthcare Center.
Born Wednesday, November 17, 1926 in Roxbury, PA, he was a son of the late Chester and Lola Culbertson McVitty.
Carl served aboard the USS Prince William aircraft carrier in WWII with the United States Navy. After being discharged from the Navy, he got a job stripping coal in Clarksburg, and later went to work at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in January of 1982 as an Electronic Technician.
He was a life member of the Hub City Club, the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223, the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168, and the Minnequa Social Club, all in Shippensburg. He was a member of the Lurgan Township Lions Club for over 50 years, and the Orrstown Lodge F. & A.M. # 262.
Carl enjoyed camping with his wife Betty, traveling, playing baseball for many local leagues, fishing, and hunting in Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Montreal.
Carl is survived by one brother, Donald McVitty, Princeton, WV; three sisters, Geneva Wise, Chambersburg, Ada Swartz, Winter Haven, FL, and Shirley Keller, Chambersburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Mellinger McVitty who passed away December 12, 2008; one brother, Clyde McVitty; and four sisters, Dorothy Horton, Janet Martin, Retha Speck, and Darlene Hopkins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc., with Pastor William Kauffman officiating. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223 Minutemen. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday, with a Masonic service being held at 10:45 a.m., at the funeral home.
