Carl Cramer

Carl L. Cramer, 81, of Newburg, died Monday, May 26, 2014, in the home where he was born, surrounded by family. Born May 1, 1933, he was the son of the late Chester H. and Cornelia J. Mathna Creamer.

He attended Newburg Grade School and graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1951. Carl served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving on the USS ROWE Destroyer. He retired from the United States Naval Reserves as a Chief Petty Officer with 28 years of service. Carl established the Carl L. Cramer Insurance Agency in May of 1956, retiring as Principal Agent in January of 2000. At the time of his passing, he was a licensed, loyal, Erie agent for over 50 years.

Carl was an avid Penn State & Shippensburg fan, enjoyed watching baseball anywhere and talking military history with anyone. However, he was at his happiest anytime he could be with family.

He was a member of the Newburg United Methodist Church and was a past Mayor of Newburg for over 30 years. Carl was a current member of the following: Orrstown Lodge #262 Free and Accepted Masons, Valley Forest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Club of Shippensburg, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, USA, Harrisburg, Zembo Temple of Harrisburg, Fort Morris Chapter AARP where he was a past President, Cumberland County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Vigilant Hose Company, Newburg-Hopewell Volunteer Fire Company where he was a past Assistant Fire Chief, Korean War Veterans Association, Fleet Reserve Association, National Sonar Association and the Newburg Memorial Day Committee, a committee dear to his heart. Carl was a past member of the following: Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce where he was past President, Erie Governor’s Coffee House, Professional Insurance Agents Association, Pennsylvania State Firemen’s Association, Pennsylvania State Mayor’s Association, Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania, B.P.O.E. Lodge #600 Elks Club of Chambersburg, Franklin County Life Underwriters Association where he was past President and Pennsylvania Association of Life Underwriters where he was past Regional Vice-President. Carl was a Life member of the following: Naval Enlisted Reserve Association-Harrisburg where he was past President, Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 where he served as Drill Sergeant for the Minutemen and Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168. For over 40 years Carl coordinated the Memorial Day Branch Bridge Naval and Marine Services in Shippensburg and was an annual speaker at the Shippensburg Area Senior High School Veteran’s breakfast.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Cramer.

Carl is survived by his wife, Glenda Truax Cramer whom he married in February of 1957; four children, Curtis L. Cramer and his wife Catherine and Matthew C. Cramer and his wife Kimberly all of Shippensburg, Leigh R. Fogelsanger of Newburg and her companion John Sundberg of San Antonio, TX, and Michael L. Cramer and his wife Wendy of Newburg; seven grandchildren, Chuck and Ryan Halter, Frank Fogelsanger, Andy, Jen, Alexis, and Cameron Cramer; three great grandchildren, Landon Fogelsanger, and Lucy and Nolan Halter.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30, 2014 in the Newburg United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Steve P. Salisbury, and The Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr. Burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veteran’s Council will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held in Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg, on Thursday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with Masonic Services conducted at 7:30 p.m.
