Bruce C. Hershey, 87, of Orrstown, died in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at his home.
He was born on February 8, 1928, in Shippensburg, a son of the late John and Elva R. Dyarman Hershey, Sr. Bruce was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II, enlisting on September 27, 1945 and honorably discharged on February 3, 1949. Upon his return, he shortly married Ms. Janet L. Diehl, on May 21, 1949, in West Virginia.
Bruce was employed at the Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring as a Supervisor of Shipping and Receiving in June of 1984, after 38 years. In conjunction, he also owned and operated his own barber shop, B & J Hershey Barber Shop, eventually working along-side his son Steve, who continues the business to this day.
He was a member of the Prince Street United Brethren Church; Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223; Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A.M.; Valley Forest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club; Fort Morris A.A.R.P #2525, where he was a former president; and was very involved in with the Patriot Federal Credit Union for more than 30 years in many capacities, also serving on the board. In his free time Bruce enjoyed building birdfeeders and houses, residential homes (building his last one at 80 years of age), hunting, raising wild turkeys, and enjoying his extremely well manicured lawn (which his wife actually mowed and took care of).
Bruce is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet; two sons, Steven D. (Mary Ann) Hershey of Shippensburg and Gregory L. (fiance’ Kathleen Lysher) Hershey, Sr., of Orrstown; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, John M. Hershey, Jr. and Wayne E. Hershey, Sr., both of Shippensburg; two sisters, Mildred T. Priest and Sandra K. Hockenberry, both of Shippensburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bruce was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Daniel, and Franklin Hershey; and four sisters, Loretta M. Craig, Mary Jane Bender, Jean Kelley, and Patricia Lovell.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg. The Rev. James O. Bolich will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Viewing will be Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., and one hour prior to the service at church on Friday.
