Bonnie F. Marpoe, 70, of Shippensburg, died Monday, March 4, 2013 at home with her loving family by her side.
She was born Thursday, October 8, 1942 in Shippensburg, Cumberland County. Bonnie was a daughter of the late Harvey L. and Anna Rosetta “Pose” Chamberlin Mentzer.
She was a proud active member and leader of AFSCME for over 30 years. Bonnie was a LPN Supervisor at South Mountain Restoration Center retiring after 33 years. She was past President of Local #2245 District, representing almost 1000 first level supervisors in the 9 south central counties of PA. She was the first women elected as president of AFSCME Council 13’s statewide executive board representing public workers in PA. Bonnie also served as the co-chair of the 1.6 million member International Nurses Advisory Committee. Bonnie’s energy and passion touched the lives of PA workers in ways that will never be forgotten.
She was a member of Messiah United Methodist Church and Women of the Moose Lodge # 2500 both in Shippensburg. Bonnie was a 1960 graduate of the Shippensburg Area Senior High School and then graduated from the Franklin County Practical Nursing Program. She was an avid bingo player and loved to gamble at the casinos.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard “Butch” and Terry Lee Mentzer.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of 51 years, John A. Marpoe, Sr.; one daughter, Martha J. Carey and her husband Jeffrey; two sons, John Andy Marpoe, Jr. and his wife Julie, and Timothy D. Marpoe, Sr. and his wife Crystal; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Trevor, Zachary, Jeremy, Austin, Nathaniel, Tim, Jr., and Amber; and four great grandchildren all of Shippensburg.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 8, 2013 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
