Blaine M. Brown, 92, of Carlisle, died Monday, December 16, 2013 in the Thornwald Home.
Born December 6, 1921 in Jewell Ridge, VA, he was a son of the late John and Lucinda White Brown.
He was the widower of Amy D. Bowers Brown. They were married August 2, 1947 in Chambersburg, PA. Amy died April 11, 2006.
Blaine and Amy moved to Carlisle in 1949 where he worked for a local ophthalmologist for twelve years. Blaine and Amy co-founded Brown Optical Company and Hearing Aid Service in 1961. Blaine was involved in both the PA Society of Dispensing Opticians, where he was on the Board of Directors and served as state President from 1971 to 1973, and the PA Hearing Aid Society. He was named Pennsylvania Optician of the Year in 1975. He retired in 1987.
Blaine was active in the Grace United Methodist Church and Sunday School. He served on the Board of Trustees, was past chair of the Work Area on Missions, was a member of the “Shut In” visitation committee, and served as an usher for many years.
He was a past president of the Carlisle Exchange Club and was named the 1986 Exchangite of the Year. He served on the Advisory Board of the Carlisle Salvation Army, was past chair of the Samaritan Fellowship, and was involved in fund raising for the Boy Scouts of America. Blaine was a past president of the Carlisle Gun Club, where he attained the rank of Sharpshooter with a .22 automatic pistol. He was a member of St. John’s Lodge #260 F. & A. M. He enjoyed playing golf.
Blaine served in the US Army Medical Corps in the eye clinic during World War 2, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap.
He attended King College in Bristol, TN.
He is survived by two daughters; Cindy Grove and her husband Bob, of Lititz and Deb Richcreek and her husband Ron, of Carlisle, five grandchildren; Chris Richcreek, Jessica Ellis, Rob and Becky Grove, and Mike Brown, three great granddaughters; MacKenzie, Madison, and Anna, one sister; Betty Lou Robinette, Wytheville, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son; Mike Brown in 1989, four brothers, and three sisters.
Private graveside services will be held at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Terry will officiate.
