Betty Jane Burkholder, 89, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the Mercy House of Chambersburg.
She was born on February 10, 1935, in Chambersburg, a daughter of the late Wilbur K. and Laura M. (Poper) Burkholder.
Earlier in life Betty was employed for many years at the candy counter in the former G.C. Murphy’s, Shippensburg. She then went on to work at Bon-Ton, Bonanza, Menno Haven, and most recently at McDonalds. Betty enjoyed working as it gave her the opportunity to be around people. She was a member of the First Assembly of God, Shippensburg, where she also taught Sunday School.
In her free time she enjoyed crafting, word puzzles, cooking, taking photos, and traveling on bus trips. Betty was also a very good story teller and liked to tell stories about old times and how it was for herself and her large family growing up.
She is survived by four sisters, Esther R. Burkholder of Shippensburg, Virginia M. Horn of Dry Run, Linda M. Russell of Shippensburg, and Mary B. Burkholder of Shippensburg; a sister-in-law, Margaret Rotz Burkholder of Chambersburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard “Red”, Dennis, and Ronald Burkholder; three sisters, Martha L. Hostetter, Frances J. Burkholder, and Patricia A. Achord; and three bothers-in-law, Bob Russell, Richard Hostetter, and Felton Achord.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Darwin Goshorn will officiate. Interment will follow in the Air Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home.
