Bettie J. Somers, 86, a resident of the Shippensburg Health Care Center, died on the evening of Friday, May 10, 2013, at the Health Care Center.
She was born on September 8, 1926, in Allensville, PA, the daughter of the late Otto O. and Lillian Bordell Priem, but was raised by her grandparents, Wayne and Esther Bordell. Bettie was a 1944 graduate of Mt. Union High School and later that year, married Mr. E. Duane Somers on December 16, 1944 in Vallejo, CA.
For her career, Bettie was an L.P.N. and graduated from the Chambersburg L.P.N. School in 1968. She went on to work at the offices of Dr. Rahauser, Van Kirk, Barton, and Davis, from which she retired from.
Bettie was an avid reader and had many hobbies, including crafts of all kinds, crocheting, and knitting. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her great grandchildren. Bettie was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Shippensburg.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela D. Orr of Chambersburg; three sons, Brian K. (Gaye) Somers of Orrstown, Larry D. (Christine) Somers of Lake Mead, and Walter “Cree” (Linda) Somers of Shippensburg; six grandchildren, Kimberly (Chad) Hutchings of Ashburn, VA, Heather and Jamie Somers of Chambersburg, Todd (Leah) Somers of York Haven, Charity (Colby) Somers Fry of Shippensburg, and Courtney Somers of Chambersburg; one step-grandson, Robert Shoemaker; eight great grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, & Kelsey Hutchings, Mia Lynne and Andrew Fry, Kaitlyn and Sean Somers and Kellan Oyler; two step-great grandchildren, Stacy Fetterhoff and Megan Shoemaker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, E. Duane, who died on June 12, 2002; two brothers, and one grandson.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be in one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
