Arlene Roddick

Arlene Witmer Roddick of Shippensburg died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Manor Care Nursing Home in Chambersburg.

Born February 24, 1914 in Millersburg, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Helen Witmer who owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1934, she graduated from a two-year course at what was then Shippensburg State Teachers College and subsequently received a B.S. degree from Penn State University. Arlene then began teaching in the Fairview one-room schoolhouse near Millersburg, PA. She later taught in the Swatara Township School district. It was there that she met her future husband, John M. (Jack) Roddick in 1946. They were married on August 12, 1947 in Winchester, Virginia. They had a son, Daniel McCulloch Roddick, who was born in 1948.

Arlene continued teaching in both Chambersburg and Shippensburg in various capacities including as the reading supervisor for the Shippensburg Area School District. She and Jack took many trips, covering most of the United States, first by motorcycle and later in their motor home. They also traveled to Europe and Asia. Jack and Arlene spent many holiday seasons visiting with their family in California. When at home, Arlene especially loved painting, gardening, cooking and bridge. She shared these pleasures with many wonderful friends.

She was a member of the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church as well as the Shippensburg University Faculty Wives, the Shippensburg Historical Society and the Shippensburg Civic Club.

Surviving is her husband, Jack, of Shippensburg, her son Dan and his wife, Janet, of Pasadena, California, as well as three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Friends may gather to celebrate her life at a service to be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday June 19th in the Presbyterian Church. The church is located at 2 South Prince Street, Shippensburg. Reverend Robert Rhodes will officiate at this service arranged by the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home
Visitation and a luncheon will follow .

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg University Foundation Scholarship for Outstanding Students.
