Anne Hockersmith

Anne Means Hockersmith passed early Tuesday morning September 14, 2021, at Elmcroft Assisted Living. She was born Tuesday, October 6, 1931, at home in Shippensburg Township to the late Chalmers P. and Elizabeth (McCune) Means.

She graduated from Shippensburg Area Senior High School in 1949 and continued her education at Shippensburg State Teacher’s College. She left college to marry J. Lee Hockersmith. After her youngest child entered school, she graduated from college with a degree in education and was a substitute teacher in Shippensburg School District and Scotland School for Veteran Children.

Anne was raised in the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church. She joined Christ United Methodist Church after her marriage. She taught children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a long-time member of the church choir which she dearly loved.

Raising her family and renovating and decorating her home of over 60 years was one of the greatest joys of her life. She is survived by her husband Lee, her children, and their spouses: B. Randall and wife Kristi; Joseph L. and wife Kathe; Carol H. and husband Angelo Tsambiras; Timothy E. and wife Lynn; and Joan Pipan.

She is also survived by grandchildren, their spouses, and great grandchildren: Lindy Speakman (Ron) daughter Addison. Joseph (Jane) sons Charlie, Andrew and Jack; Nathan (Tiffany Shoop); Erin Hockersmith. Daniel (Stevie) sons Cooper and Finley and John (Emily) children Isla, Thaddeus, Beatrix and Harlow. Breanna and Timothy. Bernie and Cy (Cayla). Anne is also survived by her sister Barbara Berkley and many nieces and nephews.

Anne was predeceased not only by her parents but her brothers and sisters: Robert and Chalmers Means, Margaret Loy, Jeannette Taylor, Marjorie Martin, and their spouses. She also lost her son Daniel and son-in-law Bernard Pipan.

Her life will be celebrated, Wednesday October 13, 11:30 AM at Christ United Methodist Church, 47 E. King St. Shippensburg, PA 17257. Pastor Bruce Levy will officiate with a light luncheon following in the church hall. Masks are required for those in attendance. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Grane Hospice in appreciation for the wonderful care they did for her.
