Alvey Powell

Alvey L. Powell, Jr., 78, of Shippensburg, died on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at the Chambersburg Hospital.

He was born on December 22, 1933, in Hancock, MD, a son of the late Alvey L. and Mary Marie Troxell Powell, Sr. On May 29, 1952, Alvey married Ms. Mildred I. Smith in Hancock, MD.

Early in his career, Alvey worked for the Karper Trucking Co., Chambersburg. He then moved on to the Cressler Trucking Co., Shippensburg, where he worked as a driver, retiring after 46 years of employment there. Alvey continued working though and was currently employed for the past nine years, at T & G Auto, Shippensburg, where he was their rollback driver. He had great interest in trucking, cars, and his faithful dogs.

Alvey was considered a “jack-of-all-trades” and a hero to his family. He was a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mildred; three daughters, Sandra K. (Robert) Bock of Lancaster, Donna J. (Barry) Johnson of Chambersburg, and Barbara S. Maclay of Harrisburg; two sisters, Lorraine (David) Golden of Hagerstown, MD and Marlene (Phillip) Fickes of Winchester, VA; one brother, Terry L. Powell of Winchester, VA; six grandchildren, Tyler Powell, Brandon Powell, Nikol Kelly, Laura Maclay, Andrew Laban, and Adam Johnson; one great granddaughter, Abbie Kelly; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Alvey was preceded in death by his son, Alvey L. Powell, III, who died on December 11, 2007 and one brother, Gerald Powell.

His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Clyde Deshong will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Viewing will be Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
