Mrs. Alberta “Berta” L. Brooks, 84, previously of 1174 Garfield Ave., Wyomissing, died in the early hours of Saturday, September 17, 2011, in the Menno Haven Nursing Facility, Chambersburg, PA.
Born in Wyomissing, PA on May 11, 1927, the daughter of the late Robert D. and Ethel H. Latady Lerch .
Berta graduated from Wyomissing High School class of 1945 and furthered her education in Danville, VA, at Stratford Women’s College from 1945-1947. Upon graduation, she worked from 1947-1955 at Helen Clark’s dress shop. Berta held many board positions over the years: Berks County Mental Health Board 1956-1958, Family Services of Reading 1957-1958, President of the Junior League of Reading 1958-1960, Council of Social Agencies 1960-1963, Reading Symphony Board 1964-1968, St. Joseph’s Women’s Board 1968-1971, the Historical Society of Berks County 1969-1985 and was Second Vice President from 1972-1985, and a Committee Member of Get Togethers and Spinsters Ball Dances 1967-1980. She was active politically as a manager for numerous phone banks and initiated the Socially Speaking Column in the Reading Eagle Sunday Edition from 1954-1957.
She possessed a spontaneous wit and a congenial smile and will be missed by all who knew her.
Berta is survived by her only child, Clifford Wilson Brooks, Jr. and his wife Kathryn and their two children, Sarah and Parker.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2011, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Reading, PA. The Rev. Christine F. Purcell will officiate. Interment will follow in the Charles Evans Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation. The Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., has been entrusted with her funeral arrangements.
