Abram L. Byers, Sr., 100, resident of Orrstown Personal Care Home and formerly of Shippensburg, died Monday, May 29, 2017.
Born October 17, 1916 in Letterkenny Township. A son of the late Enos E. and Mable Meyers Byers.
He was a self-employed dairy farmer in Letterkenny, Lurgan, Greene & Hopewell Townships. He had employment at Beistle Company and retired from Grove Mfg. at age 66. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling on many bus tours, volunteering at Camp Joy-El, walking, and making toy replica horse-drawn farm equipment. He was a member of Crider’s United Brethren Church, and in recent years, a member of the Old Order River Brethren Church.
He is survived by seven daughters, Doris B. (Dean) Meyers, Bertha B. Myers, and Mabel R. (Raymond) Bricker, all of Chambersburg, Dottie G. (Larry) Mitchell, Gladys M. (Larry) Butts, and Genny K. (Jerry) Wadel, all of Shippensburg, and Kathy F. (Larry) Wenger of Orrstown. Also survived by 24 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 21 great-great grandchildren. He is survived by one brother, Preston Byers, and one sister, Mabel Kessinger, both of Chambersburg, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Alleman Byers in October 1996, whom he married in June 1941. Also preceded in death by son Abram L. Byers, Jr., daughter-in-law, Leslie Fulmer Byers, son-in-law Norman Myers, great grandson Adam Daley, infant great granddaughter, Dionne Heck and four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 in Portico River Brethren Meeting House, Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, PA, with Bishop Kenneth Meyers and Brothers David Heckman and Laban Burkholder officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc., 112 W. King Street, Shippensburg, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township.
