Condolence From: Larry Klotz
Condolence: To Bob's family and friends,

I first met Bob Reed in the fall of 1978, when I began my career as a member of the faculty of the Biology Department of Shippensburg University, then still called Shippensburg State College. Bob was always a most helpful, enthusiastic, and cheerful colleague. I feel fortunate to have known him, and I treasure our many good times during those years.

Condolence: I was saddened to hear of Bob's passing and would like to extend my sympathy to the family. I will always remember Bob as an energetic retiree whom I met in the Biology Department at S.U. on one of his many lunchtime visits. When he found out that I was a "tree guy" like him, he convinced me to join him on the Borough Tree Committee where we worked together for several years planting, pruning and attending seminars on how to care for urban trees. I have fond memories of his sense of humor and boundless energy.

The next time you are on King street, or in one of he borough's many public green spaces there's a good chance that some of the trees you see there will have been planted or cared for by Bob, and our town is the better for it. May he truly rest in peace, he has certainly earned it.

Condolence: I was so sorry to hear Mr. Reed had died, and I send my sympathy to his family. Mr. Reed was the best science teacher a student with a preference for words and literature ever had. His sense of humor is/was legendary, and his energy at Somerset High School was boundless. Two of my classmates and I were lucky enough to be his lab assistants our senior year in addition to sophomore biology. His love of biology was passed on to me, and I eventually became a medical editor. Rest in peace, Mr. Reed.

Condolence: My sympathies to the Reed family. Mr. Reed was my Scoutmaster in Somerset. I fondly remember him, his teaching skills, practical knowledge which he passed on freely and his desire to see boys grow into good citizens. He was commanding and taught discipline and respect for people, country and the Flag. I did go on to become an Eagle Scout, Summer Camp Director at Roaring Run and a Scoutmaster myself. He had a profound impact on my life. He left a legacy. Thank you Mr. Reed.

Condolence: My most sincere sympathy to you Janice, Cynthia, Lisa, Judith, Diane, and Mark, and the entire family. I remember your father well as my Biology teacher at Somerset Area Senior High School. But there are many more memories of him, and you all as a family, as next door neighbors from the time I was about 7 or 8 until you moved away in 1965. I missed you all greatly afterwards, but applauded that he was off to his new greatly earned career at Shippensburg University. I have several school mates who went to Shippensburg who have expressed their love for him as a teacher there also. I remember in my youth, as a scout leader he had his troop camp out often in the woods bordering our properties, and he would include me, even though I wasn't a scout. He also took the time to walk with me in the woods, teach me many things about the forest, and show me things like edible roots, etc. growing there. With a smile, I remember how he was always stopping to pick up something from the ground to eat, explain it, and have me taste it. He passed on to me a love for the outdoors and deep appreciation of the beautiful things in nature, especially in the forests, that I have carried with me throughout my life. It was through him that I learned the peace and solitude of the forest cathedral. It was also through him that I had the jump on my survival training as a Navy pilot. As a child, I played with you oldest girls, romped with your dog, and even assisted your Dad in building your garage. I have many fond memories. I remember when several of you were born, especially you, Mark, and how proud and happy he was to finally have a son to go along with five beautiful daughters. Among his many contributions to me as a Biology teacher, was giving me a tremendous interest in genetics, and I spent many hours doing experiments in his lab at SASHS. It is no wonder, because of him, that at Pitt, when I chose to change my major from engineering, I chose Biology and earned that degree.
He earned my deepest respect and admiration, as a teacher, as a leader, and as a man. I have missed him for what seems like an eternity. I am so sorry for your great loss. RIP Mr. Reed. And Thank You, from the bottom of my heart. ~David L. Deal
